How to Fix WiFi Dead Zones in Your Sheffield Home

You know the one. The upstairs landing. The back bedroom. That far corner of the kitchen where your phone drops from 4G to nothing and everyone in the house has quietly accepted it as just how life is now. It isn't. It's physics, and physics has a solution that doesn't involve cable-tying a range extender to the banister and hoping for the best.

Why Sheffield Homes Are Particularly Brutal for WiFi

WiFi signals are radio waves. That sounds obvious until you really think about what radio waves do when they hit a solid brick wall, specifically the sort of wall you find in a 1930s Sheffield semi, a Victorian back-to-back in Hillsborough, or anything stone-built out towards Fulwood or Lodge Moor. They don't pass through cleanly. They get absorbed, scattered, reflected back. By the time the signal reaches your back bedroom, it's had a rough journey.

UK homes are spectacularly good at killing WiFi. We build heavy: solid brick rather than cavity, internal chimney breasts, suspended timber floors over concrete bases, steel lintels everywhere. Each one is another obstacle your router is trying to punch through from that shelf in the hallway where nobody could think of a better place to put it.

Modern new-builds are better in some ways (lighter construction, more open layouts), but they come with their own issues. Foil-backed insulation in the walls, underfloor heating pipes that interfere with 5GHz signals, and in many cases Cat6 that was installed by the developer's subcontractor and really shouldn't have been.

The Predictable Journey Most People Go Through

Before calling us, most people have already gone through some version of the same routine. Move the router. Buy a powerline adapter (does something, not quite enough). Put a range extender in the hallway, which creates a second network SSID your phone refuses to switch to automatically, making it basically pointless. Then, having read too many forum threads at midnight, a mesh system arrives. Eero, Google Nest, TP-Link Deco. It sort of helps.

Here's the bit that gets slightly frustrating to admit, because Eero and Nest do look like real products with real reviews behind them: mesh systems are genuinely good, for what they're designed for. Moderately-sized homes, uncomplicated layouts, not a lot of solid masonry between rooms. A three-node Eero Pro in a modern four-bed new-build? Works brilliantly. That same system in a five-bed Victorian terrace in Crookes with 18-inch solid stone walls, a rear extension and a converted loft. That's where it starts breaking down.

Consumer kit solves consumer problems. The problem here isn't consumer-level.

What a Professional AP Placement Survey Actually Does

When we do a site visit, the first thing we're not doing is looking at a floor plan. We're walking the building.

We're checking wall construction: solid brick, cavity, stud partition. We're identifying where signal naturally travels and where it drops off. We're looking at ceiling heights, floor build-up, where conduit can run without requiring major disruption. We're noting interference sources: neighbouring networks, microwave ovens (still a genuine culprit in 2.4GHz congestion), wireless baby monitors, the cordless phone on your mum's sideboard that nobody's switched off since 2019.

From all of that, we map out the AP positions with specific reasoning behind each one, not guessed from behind a desk but chosen from standing in the actual building. The number of access points isn't pulled from a spec sheet. One AP covers roughly 100–150m² in a typical UK home, but "typical" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. A Unifi U6 Pro in an open-plan kitchen-diner with good ceiling height and minimal clutter will cover that space comfortably. The same AP on the first floor of a solid-brick terrace might handle one room confidently and start to struggle with the next one along.

The Sheffield-Specific Challenge

We work across all of Yorkshire, and the housing stock varies enormously, which is why there's no standard answer to "how many APs will I need?"

Terraced housing in Hillsborough, Crookes, Burngreave, Walkley: solid brick throughout, usually three storeys if you include a converted loft. A single AP on the ground floor doesn't stand a chance of covering the top floor reliably. You need one per storey, minimum, positioned correctly and cabled back to a central switch.

Stone properties in Fulwood, Ranmoor, Lodge Moor, Stannington: even more of a challenge. Older builds with thick external walls and internal stone partitions. We've had properties up there where the signal barely made it from one side of a room to the other through a chimney breast. The solution isn't a bigger router. It's proper AP placement.

New-builds in Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Waverley: generally better construction for signal, but often under-cabled. A surprising number of developer-installed Cat6 runs end in the wrong place or don't reach the ceiling positions you'd actually want for an AP. We see this regularly. Not a disaster, but it means the survey still matters.

What the Actual Fix Looks Like

For most homes, the answer is multiple Unifi access points, ceiling or wall-mounted, each one powered via the Ethernet cable running back to a managed switch in the airing cupboard, utility room or a small comms enclosure.

Every AP is part of the same unified network. Same SSID, same password, seamless handoff as you move through the house. Your phone doesn't know it's just switched from the ground-floor AP to the one on the landing. It just stays connected. No manually switching networks. No dead spots. No buffering in the kitchen while someone's watching something in the back bedroom.

We also set up proper network segmentation while we're at it: guest network, IoT VLAN for smart devices, private network for your phones and laptops. Your Nest thermostat doesn't need to be on the same network as your work machine. That's not paranoia, it's just good practice.

How Much Does Fixing Dead Zones Actually Cost?

Honestly, it depends on the property. I know that's not what anyone wants to hear, but it really does. A three-bed semi with a loft that has existing cable runs and a reasonably straightforward layout could be a single AP installation at the lower end of our residential pricing. A five-bed Victorian terrace with solid floors, no existing cabling and dead zones spread across three separate floors is a meaningfully bigger job.
